Nadia Leenders

Assistant Instructor - Sandan (3 Dan)

My Experience:

I started my Kendo journey with the Edmonton Kendo Club in the Spring of 2013. I spent my entire first semester too shy to talk to anyone, but I loved it too much to let that stop me! Kendo has taught me many things, including self-confidence, the ability to stand up for myself, as well as how to be loud. At the time that I earned the rank of Nidan (2 dan), I started to assist with the children’s classes. At first, it was so that I could get as much extra practice for my own basics as I could (my basics needed a lot of work!) but I have continued with it until now because of how rewarding an experience it has been, teaching and watching the children grow.

International Kendo Experience:

I have primarily practiced within Canada, though I have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to travel internationally to the United States as well as Japan.

Seminar Experience:

I regularly participate in both the annual Alberta and Saskatchewan seminars as well as the nito-ryu seminar hosted by the Idaho kendo club. It was through the nito-ryu seminar that I was able to meet many exceptional Sensei from across Japan and the united states and in the year 2018 received an invitation to attend the “Nito-summit” in Tokyo, Japan. The lessons that I learned at this summit are experiences that I hope will stay with me for the rest of my kendo career.
